to see and places to visit.
Many of the finds
from over 100 years of archaeological investigation in south Essex can be
seen in the area's museums. Southend Central Museum has a fine collection
of archaeological finds from south-east Essex including material from the
Saxon cemetery at Prittlewell.
Thurrock Museum, Grays has extensive collections of local archaeological
material including some of the finds from the major excavations at Mucking.
The Valence House Museum in Barking and Dagenham has similar collections
from East London.
Outside south Essex Colchester Museum displays the 'Dagenham Idol'
a late Neolithic carved wooden figure over 4,000 years old.
The new prehistoric galleries at the Museum of London display many
finds from south Essex. These include material from the Bronze Age site at
south Hornchurch and the Iron age settlement at Hunts Hill Farm together with
some spectacular Palaeolithic animal remains from Aveley and Ilford, on loan
from the Natural History Museum.
The Saxon glass drinking horns and other finds from Rainham are in the
British Museum.
